PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB: This position is responsible for providing quality care of the dogs and puppies housed in the kennels as well as the cleaning and maintenance of the kennels, dog exercise yards and kennel complex.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Sanitation/Maintenance
    • Clean and disinfect kennels, exercise, training areas and grounds and other kennel facilities using approved cleaning tools and methods.
    • Report maintenance problems or repairs to the supervisor.
  • Dog Feeding:
    • Appropriate feeding including, but not limited to preparation and dispensing of food to kennel dogs and puppies, including special diet feedings.
    • Knowledge of specific diet needs and the preparation of special diets.
    • Awareness of signs that indicate a change of diet may be required.
    • Record keeping of feeding requirements in kennel binder.
  • Dog Care: Provide quality care and a safe environment to kenneled dogs and puppies including, but not limited to:
    • Reporting a dog or puppy in distress.
    • Medicating by administering oral, topical and injectaible medications under direction of Vet or supervisor.
    • Assist in emergency first aid, would treatment, tests, and exams.
    • Assisting with breeding of dogs, including artificial inseminations.
    • Grooming, including bathing, clipping, and spraying dogs.
    • Record keeping of dogs coming and going from kennels.
    • Exercise and socialize dogs and puppies.
    • Provide behavioral correction.
    • Transporting dogs and puppies using crates or approved methods.
  • Inventory
    • Monitor, store and inventory kennel supplies and replenish as needed.
    • Report needed supplies to supervisor.
  •  Administration
    • Record keeping and special projects
    • Work with volunteers and help with special events
    • Provide quality customer service.
    • Use effective communication.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or department.

REQUIRED ABILITIES

  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently, time management and good organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 65 lbs.
  • Ability to work, standing or walking on cement for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to restrain active dogs weighing up to 110 lb.
  • Ability to work different day and weekend shifts.
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with dog training and behavior, animal health and disability awareness and sensitivity.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Prior dog handling, training and dog health care experience preferred.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSES: None.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work outdoors and indoors performing cleaning, maintenance and canine health care duties. Weekend and holiday work maybe required.

SAFETY HAZARDS: Subject to hazards that can be caused by working with animals and chemicals. Activities include regular and/or repeated walking, standing, bending, stooping and kneeling with exposure to cleaning chemicals and high temperature steam cleaning.
