Thank you for your interest in scheduling a tour at Canine Companions for Independence’s Southeast campus. Before scheduling your visit, please take a moment to review the following information about our tours. Doing so will help set expectations and ensure that your visit here will be a memorable, educational and enjoyable experience.

• The dogs that live on our campus are going through an advanced and regimented period of training. The purpose of this training is to teach the dogs important skills that will enable them to be quality canine companions for people with a disability. Although we make every effort to ensure that visitors can observe a dog in training, we cannot allow the dogs to be petted or handled by our guests. When a dog is in contact with a group of people wanting to pet it, it often becomes distracted and excited, and its training is compromised. Therefore, we appreciate your understanding of our “no-petting” rule.  
  
• Tours are geared toward ages 10 years old and up.  Each tour lasts about an hour and includes a brief history of our organization, a summary of our program, a tour of each of our four buildings (administrative office, kennel building, training building, dormitory), and a short video. The tours include a fair amount of walking, so please consider wearing comfortable shoes.  
  
• In order to keep distractions to staff and dogs at a minimum, we must keep tour groups limited to no more than 20 people at a time. Tours are typically scheduled on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. During Team Training—which occurs throughout the first two weeks of February, May, August and November—tours are suspended.
