History

Canine Companions for Independence has experienced tremendous growth thanks to the dedicated support of thousands. Canine Companions is now the largest assistance dog organization in the world, and will continue to be the leader in providing exceptional dogs for exceptional people for generations to come.

  • June 1976—First Service Dog Abdul placed
  • Summer 1984—100th Graduate Team Placement

  • Summer 1987—North Central Regional  Training Center opened
  • 1987—Southwest Regional Training Center opened
  • December 1988—Southeast Region Established
  • October 1989—Northeast Regional Training Facility Opens
  • Spring 1990—Abdul, first CCI Service Dog retired
  • Fall 1992—Graduate Follow Up Program begins
  • Spring 1993—CCI Heritage Society formed

  • 1995—1000th Graduate Team placement
  • May 1996—Grand Opening Jean and Charles Schulz Campus Northwest Regional Training Center
  • 1996—Prison Puppy Raising Program Began
  • July 4, 2000—Grand Opening Anheuser Busch/SeaWorld Campus Southeast Regional Training Center
  • July 2001—Grand Opening Dean and Gerda Koontz Campus Southwest Regional Training Center
  • 2002—Southwest volunteer Cathy Phillips carried Olympic Torch
  • 2003—2000th Graduate Team Placement
  • 2005—Construction begins for The Miller Family Campus Northeast Regional Training Center

  • 2007— Southwest Regional Center rededicated as the Dean, Gerda and Trixie Koontz Campus
  • 2007—Canine Companions places 200 assistance dogs in one year
