Gaining Independence with Marco

“Skilled Companion Marco has brought Barbara so much happiness. I’ve seen her desire to be independent grow because of him,” says Barbara’s mom, Gloria.

Barbara has cerebral palsy and limited verbal communication. But Barbara and Marco have developed a special way of communicating. “Their bond is incredible. Barbara will call Marco with clicks of her tongue and he knows that she is calling him. He will push his head under her arm so she can pet him. He knows how to position himself so Barbara can reach him,” explains Gloria.

When Barbara holds Marco’s leash, people talk to her directly, instead of talking to Barbara’s mom. “Marco has improved Barbara’s self-esteem so much. She has so much pride when she takes him on walks. Marco has given her a sense of ownership and responsibility,” Gloria says.

Cast Your Vote: Name a Puppy

The Hero Litter of puppies was born a few weeks ago and we need your help naming one of these cute and cuddly little guys! Please click here to cast your vote in the 2014 Canine Companions Puppy Name Challenge.

We’re giving every Hero Litter puppy a name that starts with the letter “H.” And we’ve already asked Facebook fans of both Canine Companions and Eukanuba to make a few suggestions. Check out the full list and pick your favorite by April 22nd.

Already voted? Keep watching the Eukanuba Puppycam and earn food for Canine Companions dogs at the same time! For every like, share or comment of the Puppycam on Eukanuba's Facebook or Twitter pages, Eukanuba will donate one bowl of food to Canine Companions.

Heather Ohmart: Jack Warnock Volunteer Service Award Winner

Our National Board of Directors awards the Jack Warnock Volunteer Service Award annually to one outstanding volunteer. This year’s winner is Heather Ohmart, a Canine Companions puppy raiser and volunteer with the Coffee Creek Correctional puppy raising program.

We are proud to recognize Heather during National Volunteer Appreciation Month for her many years of dedication. Heather has helped manage the Coffee Creek puppy raising program for the last seven years and has helped the program reach their 100th puppy raised this year.
