Canine Companions Graduate’s Paralympic Journey

This weekend will wrap up another exciting Winter Olympic Games. Sochi, Russia, hosted top athletes from across the world doing what they do best. But did you know that the Paralympics, named because they run parallel to the main Olympic competitions, will begin March 7, 2014?

Canine Companions for Independence Graduate Muffy Davis and Service Dog Leibe are just one of many skilled athletes among our graduate ranks. Muffy is a seven-time Paralympic medalist. She won four medals in Alpine skiing in the Nagano and Salt Lake City games and three gold medals in the 2012 London games for hand cycling. Muffy has the extraordinary privilege of traveling to Sochi as a U.S. Paralympic Ambassador for the duration of the games.

We love to celebrate the success of our exceptional graduate teams, in endeavors big and small. From opening a door or turning on the light, to alerting to sounds in the environment, to carrying sports equipment for competitive athletes; Canine Companions assistance dogs are all gold medalists in our eyes!

A Smart Partnership for Canine Companions

All five of our training centers celebrated National Graduation Day on February 14th and (puppy) love was in the air! The Southwest Region graduation ceremony in Oceanside, CA was the site for an even bigger celebration, the official launch of the PetSmart and Canine Companions partnership introducing PetSmart for Patriots benefiting Canine Companions for Independence.

This groundbreaking partnership which brings awareness to the Canine Companions Wounded Veterans Initiative was recently featured on CNN. In the coming year, a veteran will be able to walk into any PetSmart store and learn about Canine Companions and what they need to do to get their own service dog. In addition, a number of patriotic themed services in PetSmart stores will roll out in the summer of 2014 to honor the nation’s brave men and women in uniform.

View the new veterans brochure on our publications page. Thank you PetSmart!

Transformative Giving

Transforming a life doesn't happen immediately, but for a person with a disability, transformation can happen the moment they are handed a leash. It takes two years and thousands of hours of loving guidance from volunteers and staff to transform a specially bred puppy into a highly trained Canine Companions assistance dog. These transformations are made possible through your financial support.

Please contact Dave Bonfilio, national director of planned giving, at pginfo@cci.org to learn more about joining our Heritage Society or to make a planned gift to sustain our mission.

Following the E Litter

The E Litter is just a few short months from returning to Canine Companions for professional training! Can you believe it? Check out what their puppy raisers are saying about their temperaments and what qualities they have that will make them a great match for a child or adult with a disability.

Read more on our blog, Help is a Four-Legged WordTM.

And speaking of puppy raisers, did you ever wonder what it's like to be one of the volunteer puppy raisers? It is such a rewarding experience caring for and loving a Canine Companions puppy. Read more.

The Puppies are Coming!

Our corporate partner Eukanuba is generously sponsoring our second live webcam of a litter of Canine Companions puppies. Puppies are due to arrive mid-March and you’ll get to watch them grow and learn LIVE for their first eight weeks.

Follow the pups from the very beginning. "Like" Canine Companions on Facebook for updates and announcements as the due date gets closer.
