Waffle Celebrates Success

Facility Dog Waffle’s first anniversary at the Veteran Administration’s Eastern Colorado Health Care System is next month, but she is already celebrating! Waffle and her handler, Dr. Elizabeth Holman, recently won the national Spirit of Planetree Award for the patient-centered care they provide.

Dr. Holman and Waffle work with veterans with serious illnesses and end of life. Patients open up in Waffle’s presence, even when they may have been reluctant to talk with Dr. Holman about palliative care before. “Waffle leaves every person she meets smiling,” says Dr. Holman.

This team isn’t new to winning awards. Over the summer, they also won the 2013 Friends of Nursing Award from the Veteran’s Administration. Congratulations to Dr. Holman and Waffle!

Canine Companions is committed to supporting our veterans. Learn about the Wounded Veterans Initiative and learn more about facility dogs, like Waffle.

Making friends with the E Litter

Did you know that making new friends is part of the training for the E Litter pups? The more people they meet, the more comfortable they become with new encounters.

Read more about this important part of their journey on our blog, Help is a Four-Legged Word™.

It's not just the puppies that get an opportunity to meet new people. The volunteer puppy raisers also have a community they belong to that supports, encourages and plays together.
