Bringing Comfort to Boston

It wasn’t a surprise when the Boston Medical Center invited Laurie Myers and Facility Dog Wena to visit patients and their families recovering from the Boston Marathon bombing.

As a Facility Dog, Wena is trustworthy around the machines, tubes and hustle of a hospital. Laurie and Wena brought comfort and joy to victims, including a six-year-old boy who had been removed from a life-saving ventilator just the day before. He told Laurie how much he missed his dog and loved every minute he spent with Wena.

Laurie and Wena also visited five other victims, including a husband and wife who both lost legs in the bombing. They had their own black lab, and said they were thrilled by Wena’s visit. Laurie and Wena brought much-needed smiles and relaxation to victims in addition to information about how to apply for a Canine Companions assistance dog when the time is right. One victim is already talking to their medical team about the possibility of an assistance dog.

Watch this interview of Laurie sharing her experiences.

Sign the Salute Independence Petition

More U.S. service men and women are coming home with physical disabilities than ever before. It’s a sacrifice they’ll live with every day for the rest of their lives.

Please sign our online petition to support the Canine Companions Wounded Veterans Initiative and help us place service dogs with more of these injured heroes.

May is National Military Appreciation Month, there’s no better time to honor our brave veterans – especially those who have been severely injured in the line of duty. Please sign our petition and help change a life for the better.

PetSmart Salutes Independence

On May 11 in Phoenix, AZ Canine Companions and PetSmart launched our partnership with a Salute to Independence.

The event featured local celebrities and dignitaries, including Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, and of course Canine Companions puppies and veteran graduate teams! Attendees learned more about our Wounded Veterans Initiative and the benefit of assistance dogs for our veterans. Plus, there was great family fun and entertainment featuring the Phoenix Suns wheelchair team and hip hop squad, contests, games, and over 30 veteran-based service providers.
