Virginia DeVilleneuve began volunteering for Canine Companions for Independence in 2004. She started as a puppy sitter and quickly realized that she wanted to raise a puppy for Canine Companions. Consequently, in April of 2005 Virginia got her first Canine Companion puppy. Her name was Nada and she was followed by four more puppies... Fergie, Trista, Laurel and Florette. Nada, Trista, Laurel and Florette decided they did not want to be assistance dogs. When they were released Nada, Trista and Florette came home to live with Virginia's family and Laurel was adopted by a great family in Fairview, Texas.

Virginia's second puppy Fergie graduated as a skilled companion to a young boy with Muscular Dystrophy. Fergie's family lives in Corpus Christi, Texas and they stay in touch with Virginia. Every time they talk the boy’s mom tells Virginia "I can not thank you enough for this dog!" Her son would not go outside before he got Fergie. Once Fergie became his partner they went outside and the boy was able to experience the joy of riding in a recreational vehicle. They have become great pals!

In addition to raising five dogs for Canine Companions, Virginia has dedicated her time in other ways. She has done many home visits of new Puppy Raisers, mentored new volunteers, worked at many community awareness and outreach events, planned special events, engaged community publications to feature Canine Companions, etc. Finally, Virginia and her husband have generously provided the space for weekly Puppy Training Class and periodic Canine Companions meetings since 2008! Virginia recently picked up her newest puppy to raise named Brix, a male LGX.

What Virginia likes best about her work with Canine Companions is "the ability to spread the word about Canine Companions to the public" and "being able to watch the dog grow and learn...like raising kids!". She has been a dog lover all of her life and says "They keep secrets and don't talk back!". When she was a very young child she saw a seeing eye dog in training and told her mom that she wanted to do that. Training Canine Companions puppies was her destiny!

Virginia was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but has spent most of her life in Texas. She and her husband Allan met at LD Bell High School in Hurst/Euless/Bedford. Allan went to medical school and after his internship Virginia and Allan moved to Hawaii with the Army...thank you Allan for your service! He is a pediatrician and owner of North Dallas Pediatric Associates. Last year Virginia and Allan celebrated their 50th Anniversary! They have two sons, Scott and Todd. Scott is married to Jen and they have 5 year old twin girls named Jordan and Sloane. Todd is married to Shannon and they have an 18 month old daughter named Scarlett whom they affectionately call "Nugget". In their spare time Virginia and Allan grow orchids, make their own wine, enjoy boating and follow anything involving Texas A&M. They live in Plano with their much loved dogs Trista and Holly.

Virginia and Allan DeVilleneuve are wonderful people and we are lucky to have them as part of our group! Please join us in thanking them for their contributions to Canine Companions for Independence.
