Marsha Guckenheimer has been volunteering with Canine Companions for Independence since 1999. As a Puppy Raiser, Marsha has raised several dogs. One of the dogs she raised was selected as a breeder and went on to produce many assistance dogs. Another was chosen as a Skilled Companion to a young boy in California. Today Marsha is “resting” from being a Puppy Raiser but is still very engaged in the puppy raising process. Puppy Program Manager Becca Bell says, "Marsha is an extremely generous and conscientious volunteer! Not only is she a great help to the organization as a puppy raiser, but she is a huge support to the whole puppy raising community by puppy sitting and offering invaluable guidance and support to new puppy raisers.”
When Marsha graduated from college she became a teacher. Her excellent teaching skills have helped many of us learn from her experience. When Myra Plitt thinks back to her first puppy (Flint) she says…"Sometimes we're blessed with that special puppy that's so full of energy and drive that we can only refer to them as 'the cyclone’! Thank goodness for Marsha! With her generous calm approach she makes the novice puppy raiser believe they can make progress with that bundle of energy... and Flint did graduate!” Carol Long was also a first time Puppy Raiser (Helper) when Marsha offered her assistance. Carol feels that “Marsha’s patience and consistency helped me to learn how to be a better handler. I believe that with Marsha’s coaching I was able to get Helper ready for professional training and when she graduated, Marsha had a part in that accomplishment”. Kimberly Colonnetta is currently raising her first puppy (Atlas) . Here is what she says about Marsha: "Marsha is such a wealth of knowledge. She always knows just what steps to take to teach a puppy new tasks. I had the privilege of accompanying her on a home visit for a new puppy raiser and learned so much myself. She is a true asset to Canine Companions!”
Marsha and Nessie
In addition to her involvement with the puppies, Marsha generously volunteers her time to work at many Community Awareness Events and lots of Outreach Events too. Plus she is a great ambassador for Canine Companions at the local schools and libraries in her area. She has also recruited Puppy Raisers, conducted “Home Visits” for the puppy department and attended the National Leadership Conference in Orlando last year. Marsha is a great volunteer!
Marsha has been married to her husband Steve for 50 years! They are a wonderful couple that live in North Dallas with their very special Canine Companions released dog…Nessie. In their spare time they love to travel to top rated golf courses around the country. Marsha is the sightseer and Steve is the golfer!
In addition to Becca, Myra, Carol and Kimberly there are many people who have wonderful things to say about Marsha’s volunteer efforts! Please join us in thanking Marsha Guckenheimer for her dedication to Canine Companions!
