Yappy Hour Success Stories

A look at our Yappy Hour successes throughout the years. November 1, 2017

Canine Companions is a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of adults, children and veterans with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support free of charge. In order to place these exceptional dogs with exceptional people, Canine Companions relies on its chapters, which are extensions of the regional training centers, for support in various ways. One way that our chapter supports our region is through fundraising. Yappy Hour is one of our favorite fundraising events we have been putting on since 2015.

Each Yappy Hour (usually two or more times a year!), we invite you to bring your favorite pups to mingle with friends and family for a howling good time! There, you'll have the opportunity to meet Canine Companions staff, volunteers, puppy raisers and graduate teams and to find out more about the Kinkeade Campus in Irving.

October 2017 – Sloan & Williams Winery, Grapevine

Sloan & Williams Winery

Sloan & Williams Winery is known for their superior, handcrafted wines of uncompromising quality and taste. Founded by Alan W. Kunst, Jr. and Ralph S. Mattison, Jr., who are also the winery's winemakers, integrity and respect are paramount, and you will find this in every bottle produced at this award-winning winery. Situated on Grapevine's Main Street, Sloan & Williams is considered a go-to place for many due to the great atmosphere, live music and, of course, variety of wine options. For this event, worked closely with the owners to pull off a successful Yappy Hour. The winery generously offered to donate 30% of all food and beverage sales, $5 of each bottle sold and $10 of each wine club membership sold to Canine Companions. Thanks to our fabulous hosts who have been supporting the mission of Canine Companions for years, we had an impressive last Yappy Hour of 2017!

May 2016 – Grapevine Craft Brewery, Grapevine

When you think of Grapevine, you can’t help but think of all the wonderful wineries the town is known for! Grapevine Craft Brewery made its debut as the first microbrewery in fall of 2013. Their 11,000 square foot space includes a two-story taproom and outdoor beer garden. Grapevine Craft Brewery Yappy Hour had many successes. We were able to get a large crowd for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, enjoy the beautiful weather and a dog-friendly space. The Yappy Hour committee partnered with local businesses for raffle items to raise additional funds. We sold five raffle tickets for $20. Patrons could pool their tickets to try and win one specific basket or put a ticket for a chance to win multiple items. Raffle items included:

    • Gift certificate/treats from Three Dogs Bakery Southlake
    • Basket donated by Grapevine Craft Brewery
    • Hollywood Feed Store basket for dogs
    • Kendra Scott jewelry
    • Basket of goodies and gift card from Fuzzy’s Tacos
    • Gift certificate for a custom spray tan from Hair by Denise

Two Bros And A Chica provided yummy tacos and nachos and donated 5% of their proceeds to Canine Companions. In total, through raffle sales and percentage of sales from the food truck, we received about $584 in total.

Thank you to Tupps Brewery and Grapevine Craft Brewery for hosting out Yappy Hour events. We thank you for supporting our mission and providing great settings for people to learn more about the wonderful things Canine Companions does for our community. Thank you to our Yappy Hour Committee and volunteers who put in so much effort to ensure everyone had a great time and the events went off without a hitch! Stay tuned – our next Yappy Hours will be in September (location TBD) and October (Howl-O-Ween themed) at Sloan and Williams Winery.

April 2016 – Tupps Brewery, McKinney

Tupps Brewery

Tupps Brewery is 15,000 square feet, founded by Keith Lewis and head brewer Tupper Patnode. It is housed in the McKinney Cotton Mill complex, which dates back to 1910. Besides having an awesome location in the fast-growing “best places to live,” the brewery supports local charities and gives back to the community by hosting events. They have a dog-friendly environment and bring in live music on the weekends. We worked closely with Chris Lewis (Brewer) and Katie Baker (Marketing & Events) to pull off a successful Yappy Hour. The brewery donated $5 of every $15 promotion package to Canine Companions as well as any tips received during the event. Smokin' S Bar-B-Que catered the event, offering delicious barbeque plates to anyone who wants to pair their cold beer with some grub. They donated $2 of every $12 plate to our mission. We received $329 in total thanks to our wonderful hosts and volunteers that made this event a great first Yappy Hour of 2016!
