Founded in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Headquartered in Santa Rosa, CA, Canine Companions is the oldest and largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs, and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. The result is a life full of increased independence and loving companionship.
Exceptional Dogs for Exceptional People
Since founding in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence has become the leader in the assistance dog industry. The specially-bred dogs are trained in over 40 commands and by doing these tasks for a person with a disability, their independence and quality of life can improve greatly.
There is no charge for the dog, its training and ongoing follow up services. Canine Companions is funded by private contributions from individuals, gifts from businesses, civic gruops and service clubs, grants from corporations and foundations and special events and mailings. We do not receive government funding.
The Southeast Region of Canine Companions was founded in 1989 in Orlando and serves the 8 states of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
